I have been burning through book after book since summer time. I have not had a reading frenzy like this in a very long time! It is awesome! I have a huge passion for reading. This is something I have been able to pass onto the children, making me swell with pride. In fact it is totally one of my best parenting, that they love stories and books.
Over at Being Savvy, November is a month to explore books and children. I am in seventh heaven. Reading about what to read to your children is a close second to reading to your kids, for me. Wow does that sentence make sense? I am so excited I am not even making sense! The point I am so eagerly trying to make is that I am always on a quest to find stories and books to share with the kids. Now that Becca is advancing into preschool and beyond the challenge is even greater.
Luckily I have fabulous friends that send me amazing chapter books. Thanks Holly, the books look amazing and we are devouring our library book so we can turn our attention the the cat books Jamie sent!
I am also fortunate to receive books from Harper Collins. They totally sent me the coolest books this past month. I know a lot of you have your minds wandering to Christmas presents already, well these two books are total potentials for the geeks and DIY’ers in your life. These books are totally the type of books that get people talking and thinking.
First we have The Hungry Scientist. Who can pass up a book that promises to instruct you on how to create edible undies, LED Lollipops and making pinhole cameras out of (almost) anything! Now that we own a house my husband totally is concocting plans to Ferment Pomegranate Wine in our basement, while I am going to be upstairs creating edible origami. I am not sure how I survived to this day, without a full understanding of the science of ice cream and my husband, always eager to whip out the dry ice will be serving our first house guest Dry-Ice Martinis! Totally a fun book to explore!
Show Me How. A simple request. Well this book includes 500 step by step instructions for everyone to know. Some of the instructions are basic and I would hope that people would go beyond the book for further clarification before attempting some of these things, however totally a cool book to have. The book is amazingly well organized into categories, such as make, eat, drink, style, etc. I now know where to look if I need to sew a spooky voodoo doll, tell time with a potato clock, identify men’s facial hair styles, tie a Texas rope handcuff, mount a camel, or how to breath fire. All these and more of life’s questions are included with full, funky illustrations. Some of it is just fun, silly goodness and others practical.
Both books have provided us endless giggles and totally got us talking about the endless possibilities.
And if you have had enough of my words and wit, you can head over to Being Savvy Halifax and see Becca’s Top Ten Books (at least this week). What is your child’s favourite book at the moment? Yours? I just finished Interview with a Vampire by Anne Rice. Cult classic. Had to do it eventually

Yay! I would love it if my kids had inherited my love of reading, but they never did. I tried, too.
I loved Interview with a Vampire. Read it as a teen. My son is just starting to get into chapter books. He brings home a lot of Pokemon ones from school(UGH). I have been encouraging him to read the Magic Tree House series and I just ordered a set of Geronimo Stilton book from Scholastic for him.

I am beyond addicted to reading. I have to time myself though because it is really cutting into EVERYTHING else!
Geordie is into anything with cars, planes and come to think of it…anything mechanical and how it works.
We will be bringing out The Nutcracker soon.
As for me…I’m willing to take any suggestions! Prefer novels but while living here nothing to do with crime, guns, etc…

James says his favortes to read are Tut’s Tomb: Lost and Found and Eygptian Gods and Goddesses (anyone sensing a theme here?). His favorites that I’ve read to him is The Invention of Hugo Cabret and The Tale of Despereaux (both have possibly disrubing content for younger children).
I’m reading Pirate’s Passage right now as a pre-read for a read aloud. It’s pretty good, I’ve just started, but most importantly it reminds me of you since it takes place your way.

I wish I had the same love for books as you do. I adore how you can sometimes not put a book down until you are finished.

Kamryn is so into reading at the moment. She likes anything, the faves being this Bones series (altough it is more comic book like) and then anything Hannah Montana. She has morphed into this chapter book reading nut since the start of Gr 2.
Morgyn has started the Twilight series, watching her Mom read like a mad fool has fed her desire LOL. Which is nice as she isn’t always into reading.
Jillian reads anything off her book shelf, or has me or Kamryn do it. I love watching Kamryn read to her little sister.
Myself I’m trying to pace myslef with the Twilight series, but it’s hard. I’m 2.75 books behind LOL.

They sent me Show Me How too. I still have to write my review!
Pomegranate wine and edible origami? Yea, you’re my kind of folk.
I am an avid reader, so I hate the periods where I struggle to find a good book, one that eats up my attention. I’m in one right now, so I’m going over to read your list…

…and by your list, I mean Becca’s. But now I see it’s for kids, which is still all good.

Too funny! I just asked Amy for a book today. I haven’t read a book since University…. probably my reasons for not wanting to read lately… book overload!!
My kids love any book that we’ll read to them. Sometimes they have their preferences, but, they’re starting to get into those “first reader books”. It’s fun to help the kids try to read. It’s amazing when they can put a sound to a letter. Such a fun developmental stage!

I get a lot of good book suggestions from NPR. They have a children literature book review: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=4506027

I love reading, my problem is that it’s very dificult for me to actually get into a book, so it’s very rare that I find one that I can just sit and read till it’s done. Most the time I have to force myself to sit down and read it.
I love your passion for books and reading and I love how it’s been passed successfully down to your beautiful kiddos.

Our son is really into Dr. Suess books right now. We’ll read one to him and he’ll “read” it back to us. It’s very cute.
I love reading too, it’s just been too long since I’ve made time to do it!
