You may not have associated religion and health before because somehow they seem like they are on different sides of the spectrum. Yet, religion and health are very much interrelated and are evident in certain moments of your life. No matter what your religion is, it is a big part of who you are. It is a foundation of your beliefs and principles. Your lifestyle and way of living are affected by your faith. Thus, it can also be said that religion can affect your health. So what exactly are the influences of religion on health?
Religion is slowly becoming a point of interest for people in the medical field. Numerous studies have been conducted on the subject. It was found out that religion can affect our health behavior especially our psychological health. Studies show that people who attend religious services regularly live longer for another two or three years than those do not. This is because they are more grounded on their faith which makes them feel content and happy with their lives. They are also more connected to their community through attending religious seminars and meetings where they meet other people from their neighborhood and form friendships. They can form social support systems based on their shared faith. These people then can be considered as more psychologically stable than others and thus, they are healthier.
Another influence of religion on health is its effect on life and death decisions. Like for example, when you were sick, you probably have prayed to God to make you feel better. You may believe that there is a Supreme Being who inflicts sufferings and is the only one who can get rid of them. He determines the outcome of whatever is happening to you. That is why most hospitals have chapels where people can pray to God and ask for help to take care of them and their loved ones.
Religion can also steer people to live a healthy life. Religion teaches people to be good and do good deeds. People who have strong faith in God most usually stay away from vices like smoking and drinking. Thus, their bodies are kept from the harms that are caused by cigarettes and liquors and they lead a healthier lifestyle.
These are only some of the influences of religion on health. There are more that we have not thought of yet and we have not noticed but religion actually plays a larger role on our health than we think.
