Rambles of a Tired Mom

Thursday, October 23rd, 2008

phew. That headache was nasty. I was completely out for the day. Yesterday was better and today will be fantastic!

I am almost done Becca’s costume!! I have one little thing to do! Then I have another sewing project to get done (have the fabric just need to get at it!) Becca’s costume turned out so awesome. YAY me! She tried it on and loves it. It made me feel all warm and fuzzy! I so adore creating things!

Ethan and I are attending Becca’s Preschool Aquatics this morning. She is so excited to share it with us. I felt like a total bad parent with these classes. She swims in the pool for half an hour then the rest of the time she is with her class. So I would take Ethana nd we would run errands or play a the playground. However, what Becca really wanted was for me to watch her in the pool! awww! So last week I made sure to be there to cheer her on and watch and will do so for the rest of the class.

A few people have asked how the packing is going … ha ha ha. Packing? What packing? I made a promise to myself that I would not get overwhelmned by it all and sucked into it paying little attention to the rest of my world. So November 1st, I will start but the kids, our friends, our activities, will take president over silly old packing. I have a month where we have the apartment and the house (grrr evil lease), so I have plenty of time, beside J has finals to distribute and mark as well as all that other end of semester professor jazz.

I am however done most of my Christmas shopping. I do have a few things to square away, complete etc and stocking stuffers to take care of. I am so glad this is the last year that I will be moving in December! sheesh!

Thank you for all your support concerning the Savvy Source! I am so excited about the project. In fact I have a new post up today about choosing a dollhouse, check it out!

w00t .. err ouch

Tuesday, October 21st, 2008

Oh my … I have the worst headache. I totally resent being a human barometer. Pressure changes, the wind starts howling and I am curling up into the fetal position, crying, snapping at my children if they do more than whisper and wishing I could crawl back to bed.

Guess who is working late tonight?

ugh.

My head hurts so bad I feel nauseous. yum. We are heading to the library this morning, really so the children get a break from their irritable mother. Besides libraries are suppose to be quiet …. right?

ugh.

Now for the w00t!

I am officially live on the Halifax Being Savvy blog. There are a ton of posts to explore and I will be posting three times a week. It has been so much fun (and a lot of work) to start writing for the Savvy Source. I am learning so much about my community and how wicked cool my city is! The topics are very local, however I will point you over there from time to time, as I write on topics pertaining to preschoolers.

Content and Busy

Thursday, September 4th, 2008

I have a lot going on right now. With looking for our sweet dream home, spending time with the children, running, swimming, building friendships, crafting, blogging, working …

Working?

I will be starting a little writing gig for The Savvy Source!!! I am so excited to have the opportunity to write for the site. I will be sure to share with you when my first post is up. I have also been frantically finishing up stray projects so I can settle into a routine and maybe start accepting new design jobs. I finished J’s site and I have two sites that are in tweaking stage now. It feels so good to have a side thing going and actually balancing it with the children’s needs.

I have a few books I looking forward to sharing with you guys in the coming weeks. I have been reading so much. I love that I am at that time, where there is time to do all this. The infant stage is so consuming (and wonderful). Now Ethan is content to play beside me as I work on projects, still ever present with them both yet my own person too. Becca is totally absorbed into her own thing. I am more of a nuissance when I am not occupied too!

It is such an amazing feeling. Being this content, happy … settled. I am waiting for the next thing to rock me, yet not really holding my breath for it anymore. I have arrived at my good place. I like it.

To add just one more thing to my ever growing list of challenges, I am going to attempt to Ditch the Disposables! A challenge from the uber talented Crunchy Domestic Goddess.

You can make the switch from:

Paper napkins to cloth napkins
Paper towels to cloth towels
Tissues to handkerchiefs
Paper, plastic or Styrofoam plates to your kitchen plates
Inexpensive plastic “Take & Toss” sippy cups to Sigg or Camelbak bottles or the Kleen Kanteen
Disposable water bottles to (again) reusable bottles like Sigg or Camelbak
Plastic sandwich bags or paper lunch bags to reusable containers/bags
Swiffers (or similar products) to a broom and dustpan or mop (or use reusable cloths like cloth diapers/terry inserts in your Swiffer)
Disposable dust rags to cloth rags
Disposable diapers to cloth diapers
Disposable wipes to cloth wipes (inexpensive plain washcloths work really well)
Disposable feminine products (tampons, pads) to reusables like DivaCup, MoonCup, Glad Rags, Luna Pads, Pretty Pads, or New Moon Pads, among others
Grocery store bags to reusable bags

We are already using cloth grocery bags, cloth diapers (at home), we reuse all our containers, so there are only a few things on her list that I am still un-green.

Disposable feminine products — I want to switch, but oddly I stocked up YEARS ago in preparation for the world to end or something along those lines, so I want to use what I have before switching. The Diva Cup is a Canadian company that I have only read rave reviews about.

So I am going to challenge myself to Paper towels to cloth towels … I still way guilty of using the quick and easy routine. So from this day forth I will try not to use paper towels, opting for cloth towels instead!

Are you up for the challenge? Are there any areas that you could make a little change? Check out the Crunchy Domestic Goddess for more details and tons of great Green tips and more.

On The Road Again

Wednesday, April 25th, 2007

Is there something on my chin?Pics of the Day ~ My Favorite Picture of Ethan so far and Becca in the tub with a Popcycle! ~

Ok … I really cannot keep it all inside anymore. Blogging and keeping “secrets” is totally hard to do!

Here is the deal.

More than anything, J & I wanted to return our family back to Canada. J applied for all the academic positions that were posted in Canada this year, but due to a lot of qualified competition, it did not pan out.

Popcycle Tubbing

In the meantime, J being the uber provider that he is, starting looking at alternatives without giving up on the ultimate goal of a position in Canada at a university. Through a series of events (it is so who you know not always what you know), J began pursuing a second post-doctoral position in Los Alamos.

There is a National Lab, located in Los Alamos. Most famous for *~gasp~* the development of the atomic bomb, many moons ago. Now a days it is not geared towards the mass destruction of our planet, instead the lab is a great facility for researchers.

As you know J, jetted over to New Mexico the days proceeding the birth of our son. The interview was a success! Well not “officially”. We have to wait for American government approval (since we are Canadian there is an up to 45 day waiting period for said approval) before receiving an “official” offer from the Lab.

Yet, J has been awarded a Fellowship Award that would enhance his standing at the National Lab, as well as (now this is to the best of my understanding, the world of Chemistry is friking confusing at the best of times) award him extra funding to attend Chemistry conferences, books and educational materials. His future “unofficially as of yet”, boss has submitted applications for not only this Fellowship but another that would place him in even better standing. I am not sure how much this makes sense to the non-science people. Fellowships=Good Reputation and great for J’s resume in the future.

J is very excited about the the work/research at the lab. That is very important to me. My husband’s work happiness is why we have sacrificed a “normal” life and have left our beautiful country. Los Alamos is a very small town. J is moving us from the hub of the universe to a 1 Starbucks town. No Target, one grocery store … small town. There appears to be a yarn shop there (phew!) and Sante Fe is a mere 3/4 hour drive away (I drive that knit every week in bad traffic! hehe).

We are not totally sure when we are hitting the open road, however it appears as though late June, early July is when we leave. I have not given this move a lot of thought. I kept saying I was going to have the baby first then deal with moving. Now we are going to wait for an official offer before I am going to get in a tizzy. However, J being awarded a Fellowship through the lab, and his future boss going to all this effort for him … things are looking pretty positive.

This life is never dull. I am going to miss my friends here so very much. My intention is to cram in as much time with them as humanly possible until we leave. We are also going to have Becca’s 3rd early so she can enjoy it with her friends. UGH … I want to go, start the new chapter in our lives … but leaving is always so hard to do … starting over … ugh. I’ll talk kids next time … it felt good to share this :)
