H1N1 Thoughts

H1N1 Thoughts

I had a lot of people ask me if I was going to vaccinate the children. After a lot of long talks with my husband our decision was to absolutely vaccinate the kids. Our family doctor (whom I trust) was also very supportive of that decision. Up until Tuesday, Ethan was the only one that qualified and was vaccinated last week.

Now the rest of us qualify (excluding Cordelia as she is too young) because we live with a baby younger than 6 months old.

J & I are nervous to be vaccinated at the same time. Not wanting to crash at the same time we may spread it out so that we are not ill at the same time. Up until possibly today Becca was too ill to be vaccinated.

We are now on day 10 for illness.

My children have never been this sick.

Do they have H1N1? We will never know for sure which strain of the flu they suffered from. They were not hit as hard as some and harder than others. Considering they have never really experienced the flu, both Ethan and Becca fared well.

If  a shot could have prevented this misery in time I would have spared them this. Yet we have never got the regular flu shot since it had not touched our lives.

J & I still have not fallen ill despite the fact that all three children have shown signs of the flu.

J has a theory that we have already had H1N1 back in California. Both of us got very very ill and suffered for days. At the time I thought I was dying. Did that allow us to be unscathed this time?

Becca is finally feeling better. We are keeping her home today as a preventative measure. Monday is a Professional Development Day for teachers so she can return on Tuesday at full health only missing the letter J and the introduction to counting by  twos.

Ethan is still very moody and is experiencing stomach problems. His body aches leaving him miserable at times. It is quite unpredictable. Not fun.

Cordelia is stuffy and clingy but otherwise fairing much better than the other two. Thank goodness.

I am going batty all cooped up in the house all the time. I am dreadfully behind in Christmas shopping and errand running. I am looking forward to walks, interactions with people over the age of five and new scenery.

Have you or your kids experienced the flu? How did you survive your quarantine?

G had a 24 hour type stomach thing. My father and C had the cold/feeling horrible part.
We are just waiting for shots. First time we are going to get any kind of flu shot. But where we have found that the first year in a new place we catch everything AND C is doing a lot of travelling right now (already ATL and To. China in Dec.) we feel more comfortable getting it.
That’s what it comes down to when making the decision…comfort level. When G was sick our first thought was ‘oh no’ and it scared us enough to realize that we would feel more comfortable with it!

J had the flu, first time actually and was miserable (type unknown). But we survived the quarantine quite well because he was so miserable until he was *poof* better.

We’ve all gotten the regular shot (do most years), J and DH have both gotten H1N1 shots, I can’t find one yet, but am working on it before we travel (since my sister has an under 6 month old, I would really like to be vaccinated, but if I can’t find it). We’ll see.

My daughter received it at all. This is the FIRST vaccination she had NO negative reaction too. No sore arm, no fever, no tiredness….NOTHING!

  4. Gail says:

They haven’t offered it here yet. I imagine it will all come up next winter again. I assume we will get the family vaccinated. We (MJ and I) fully believe that we would rather have done it – understanding all the pros and cons – than not do it and regret our choice later on should our kids get ill or worse. Hence every other vaccine on the progammes we’ve been through.

I’ve had flu. Not the swine (I think) but had flu last winter. It’s not nice. It’s horrid.

I pray you all recoup to fullness over the weekend. Poor Becca!

Sickness is hard on everyone, no matter who is sick in the family. Whenever we’re sick we spend a lot of time watching videos.

Only the Baby has been able to get the H1N1 shot. The rest of us got the seasonal flu mist though.

We were just not sure what to do with the vaccinations. We decided on Tues to go and get Jillian done. It was fast, we were in and out and she was a trooper. At the moment she has a cough and sore thorat side effect from the shot??? At the moment Jillian is the only one in our house that qualifies which is frustrating when you have 2 other kids, but then their immune systems have to be a little stronger than hers. I. Hope.

Hi Raechelle, been a while. Chad, Ian (2) and I have all been vaccinated with this one and Scott (4 months) is too young, otherwise, he would have been given the shot too. This time, someone we know died from H1N1. Healthy male, young kids, played hockey with Chad, coulda been Chad. I’m sorry to hear you all got this sick and I hope your kids are better soon!

  8. We didn’t vaccinate for any sort of flu. We never do. My youngest son suffered from what the doctor called a flu-like virus, but was given some cough medicine and Tamiflu. I should probably vaccinate my teenagers, but my oldest never gets sick, like at all, and my youngest is like me…..I’m afraid a flu shot for either of us would cause full-scale flu since our immune systems seem to be weak.

Hope your kids are feeling much better soon!
