A Trip to the Hospital

A Trip to the Hospital

Not for me! I am still very uncomfortably pregnant.

No, Ethan needed to head to the hospital this morning. Last night he and his Dad were goofing around, heading to the bedroom for story time before bed and he was injured. J accidentally pulled on his arm and Ethan was visibly in pain. He refused to use that hand and claimed his wrist hurt. There was no swelling, bruising or sign of trauma. Ethan went to sleep as per normal.

However when he woke this morning he was still not using that hand. We decided that was not a good sign so headed to the very hospital we will go to when the baby is ready! The triage nurse examined Ethan when we arrived and was pretty sure it was a dislocated elbow. She popped it back into place, much to the dismay of Ethan then let us know that if he started to use it, we could decide not to see a doctor.

He started using it not long after we sat down, so we were just about to leave and we were called back. It was so quick, the doctor was happy that the dislocation was back in place. He assured us we did nothing wrong (J felt soooo bad last night!) I jokingly stated since we have an older child we have never broken we are confident it was a freak thing.

So all that crap you are hearing in the US about Canada Healthcare is bullshit. We were in and out of a Childrens Hospital in less than an hour. The care we received was awesome and we did not have to pay for it. I get that change in the US is super scary and there is a lot of stuff unknown. Attempting to make the Canadian system look substandard is not going to achieve knowledge, rather it will create more fear. I am not stating our system is flawless. Crap happens, people slip through the system. That happens in EVERY health care system. I have no idea what is best for the US. I am not American and I would never assume that I knew what was right. I know what is right for Canada. Universal healthcare. Equal access for all. Healthcare controlled with people in mind, not profits, not companies … my child that was overjoyed to see the fish and get some stickers.

Sorry for the rant, I rarely get on a soap box, the ad I saw with some dumbass Canadian knocking our country really pissed me off.

I’m glad Ethan is ok! I’m sure it was a freak accident, these things happen and you and J are great parents! I can’t stand our health care system in the US is sucks and it’s crap. S has asthma and he’s been given so much medication, I’ve had complications in procedures…etc it goes on and on. I’m just so sick of it. I hope you get to the hospital soon and deliver your new addition!

Hugs to Ethan and you guys too. I know myslef I’m thankful for our healthcare system.

  3. Holly says:

You don’t even want to hear about our recent visit to urgent care, the one where we left saying, “Well, that Dr. was obnoxious,” only to see her right behind us. Oops.

Glad all is fine. Take care.

Soooo glad to hear that Ethan is fine! Poor J, he must feel aweful :( Adam’s mom once dislocated her nephew’s shoulder jerking him out of the way of a car in a parking lot…she felt horrible, but the little guy eventually forgot and now comes play at her house again :)

Hear, hear! I LOVE Canada’s healthcare system, although I do think that HRM has one of the best set ups in Canada. I guess in NB, it’s pretty much all considered rural, so just one hospital for all age groups. So sad though, a friend of the family was turned away from a hospital in TO because they had no beds…she’s a 5 year old with a chronically fatal heart condition, whose non verbal-autistic + has Downs. Please pray for her! They were going back in today I think.

glad to hear ethan is ok! yoshi dislocated sasha’s wrist a few weeks back, and last week it (appears to have) popped out again, though after twenty minutes or so, it was fine!

    So glad Ethan is okay.
I think you are right about the health care system. I have had nothing but good expereinces in ER. Yes, sometimes you have to wait but usually that is because there is someone with a more serious injury. I have taken our son to the Children’s Hospital three times now and they were so amazing. The longest we had to wait was four hours and that was because nothing was actually wrong with him but his sister did fall on his head (he was 6 weeks old)and we wanted to have him checked out.
I feel so lucky to live in Canada!

Don’t know if you saw my comment on FaceBook, but oldest son, when he was about 3, wanted to jump across a mud puddle, and I held his hand. His elbow dislocated. Not sure if the doctor told you once it happens, it can happen again, but they did tell me that, and they were right. Happened about two more times. And yea, I felt like a child abuser until the doctor let me know that it is very common, especially when kids hit a growth spurt!

No baby yet??? Have you gotten gifts from the shower yet?? I’m so excited to see that baby!

And I’m not claiming to know anything about your health care, but I have only heard GOOD things about it. But yea for your rant! You said Bull Shit! LOL LOL

  9. Oh, I am so glad nothing was seriously wrong!

I am glad that your healthcare system is so good. I wouldn’t mind a change for that in the U.S. But the care we have to pay for here isn’t that good…I have never been in and out of ANY doctor’s office in 30 mintues. Ever. I can only imagine how bad a health care system like that would be here. But I’d still kind of like to have it.

My first thought about the American health care system was that there would have been a social worker in there, too, sniffing around for abuse. Oy.

I’m so glad it all worked out so well!

  11. Damn – I just wrote a long response! It got eaten bc I navigated away from the page :( In summary – glad you guys recognized the signs of injury and took appropriate action. I’m glad you blogged about this – there are tons of preventable common childhood injuries like caregivers arm (disloacted elbow or shoulder) that need to be talked about to prevent them.

Also our healthcare system totally kicks butt! Hubby’s mom has cancer and her surgery, chemo and radiation are all free! We live in the best country in the world!

Oh poor baby! argh… oh my goodness gracious my elbow hurts now

Here in the US btw you can get hurt, go to the hospital and get it taken care of without paying for it. My brother in law was shot (yeeees, shot – doh) he had no insurance went immediately to trauma in an ambulance they did the surgery with an absolutely excellent surgeon and poof – didn’t pay ’cause taxes did including follow ups. Not sure what the griping is about – BUT I’m sure someone will say something different. Everyone has a story eh?

From what I’ve heard from Canadians that I do know – they have no issues with their healthcare. I have heard one or two stories but heck, I have insurance and have one or two stories of no good! I just would rather my gov’t stay out of my health. It’s not their business imho – our gov’t has gone wacky and gets to take care of themselves first.

Australia has an awesome healthcare too!

I do hope your little one feels better and that momma feels better! Oh I do not LIKE when little ones are hurting… :(

    Hugs lady!
