Over the weekend I had Tweet’d that it was gorgeous outside and that the kids were getting downright dirty playing. It was glorious. I received a lot of feedback, questioning my patience and sanity allowing the kids to play in the mud.
You guys let your kids dirty right?
Isn’t that why we have uber washing machines (well I don’t but i have one that works just fine)?
I wrote a couple articles this week on the subject of getting out in rainy weather and the importance of it.
If you need some inspiration for activities to do in the rain with your kids head over to Being Savvy Halifax.

Obviously those people have never lived in a desert. Any sign of rain is a glorious event, meant to be experienced outside for sure.

I hate drizzly rain but ever since I was a little kid I have loved downpours. Playing in the rain is alot of fun and I let Joey do it as long as it isn’t too cold. At his nursery they take them outside into the garden no matter what the weather is like and I like the fact that they do that.

As much as I winge when the kids come in all muddy and messy I do love watching them play in the mud. I remember doing it myself. Fun times.

Some of my fondest childhood memories are of getting down and out dirty and my mom hosing us down before letting us in the house. Dirt should be one of the main components of childhood.

I totally think that gumboots and raincoats were invented for the specific purpose of outside play in the rain!

My children definitely get filthy. We’ve had some fun walks just after it rained and they’ve played in the mud puddles!

Unfortunately I didn’t like playing in the dirt when I was a child. I vaguely remember getting in trouble for tkaing spoons out of our kitchen to play in the dirt so that my hands wouldn’t have to touch it. I also didn’t like finger painting. As a parent, I pretend the dirt doesn’t happen!!!

I’m SO with you on the “Seriously?” question. What the He!! is childhood–and life for–if not mud and dirt?
Our next door neighbor is a pharmicist and, while being a little OCD about cleanliness is a good trait in that career, it’s put a huge pressure on his 3-year-old daughter, who already washes her hands obsessively, if even a smudge of marker gets on her. Sigh.

Sam LOVES the mud. He makes his own…his sand & water table looks so gross…more like a mud table, but that’s what being a kid is all about
I’m with you on this one!
Interestingly enough, I blogged about this very thing today. The kids had a blast and it looks as though yours did as well.
LOL…this seems to be the theme for the week…I really need to let loose a little more and let my kids stomp in puddles. I mean heck…I give them pool baths in the summer and let them splash in streams…whats my issue with muddy puddles

I figure if the kids are filthy at the end of the day, they must have had a lot of fun. For me, splashing in puddles is only second to breaking the thin ice on top of puddles.
