Pleasantly Distracted
J is taking a few days off this week. A pre-classes starting, relax, get a whole bunch of things done sort of staycation. We hope to hit the beach (weather permitting) and we are also looking at houses.
I am so nervous and so excited. We are meeting with a Realtor today. We had met his assistant at an open house and really liked her approach, later we found out that our good friends used his talents when relocating here. The price range that we so solidly belong to, is a range that a whole lot of people are in, so hopefully having a skilled Realtor will help us get our little dream house.
There is one place. It is almost what we want. We are moving very slowly and cautiously, so if it slips through then it wasn’t meant to be. A house that sold really quickly was oddly perfect (just down the street from almost house). When I stood in the living room I could envision our children lives racing forward in that house. The house itself was far from perfect, but it felt right. The almost perfect house didn’t do that to me, it didn’t send images dancing in my head. However it is still occupied where the other house wasn’t, leaving me more vulnerable to letting my imagination go wild. We have walked through twice now, on two different occasions.
We have the funding (sort of), we have the desire … now it is just a matter of choosing the right place, right time …. ack it is so much pressure. This is way harder than finding a mate! At least then I could let my heart lead the way! At least we know that the market here has remained stable and has progressively increased, unlike the wild West at the moment. Starters, we could not afford to buy a home there, and their market inflated way high and is now on the downward slope. Here it is just expensive.*sigh*
When you found your home did you have visions of your children frolicking about? Did it take your breath away? Am I just a nut?

Although my home isn’t what I had ever envisioned myself in (I am in the process of trying to make it that way, and it certainly feels like home now!), I could definitely see my kids growing up there. I even knew which child would get which bedroom right away, before the kids ever saw the house and picked bedrooms.
Good luck on finding the house of your dreams; I just know the right one will happen for you

Try not to let your heart get too involved in the process. It is very likely to get broken. You really should make sure that you are totally and extremely ready to afford a house. If there are any reservations at all then listen to them. It is a big decision and it is scary to spend that much money on one thing.

Oh I am excited for you!
The thing is, with your first house, there isn’t going to be a perfect house. In fact, if the market up there is actually good, narrow down the 3-4 most important things that you want, and count your blessings if you find it. That’s not to sound discouraging, but it took us about a year and a half of steady looking to finally get our house (and it’s still not a dream house, but it is OUR house). The market here was nuts at the time, and the house we bought had 4 offers on it after being listed 24 hours. Too bad you aren’t in the market down here now, you would have a lot of time and leverage, since things aren’t great.
It’s a lot easier to envision yourself in an empty house, or a house that is close to your own style of decor, but if you can get past the other people’s clutter and decor you will open up a lot more options for yourself.
Good luck! I can’t wait until you post that you found a house and closed on it!

My house took my breath away - absolutely. I hope you find one that does the same for you.

Aimee’s right - it’s never perfect but you can make it that way once your family is in it!

I’m so glad we didn’t have James when we got our first house. But it worked o.k.
I have a love/hate with the backyard here (although no rattlesnakes yet this year, knock on wood
). It is perfect for the imagination though.
I can’t wait. I’m so excited for you.

Finding a house is so hard. When we bought the house we are in now there were only five on the market! But it turned out great and at first I was not so sure.

Ah, yes! House hunting! There were two houses we had our eye on. We hoped we would get the bigger house because we felt we’d be getting more for our money — and the yard was huge! We did imagine little people in the bedrooms — OK, at least *I* did — and what the future might be like in the house.
And we got the house!

No, not a nut! Just maybe a little weird!
I think what you’re feeling is perfect. I’m a feeling person and I say go with it!
I’m so excited for you. I will admit I am on my toes wanting to know where you are looking. Scary as it sounds I’m living home through you!
By the way…have you gone to Westmount School (in WEstmount subdivision by Halifax Shopping Centre) this summer? They have a great playground and water park (that’s free). Great for something to do that isn’t that far!
Have a good staycation!

I wouldn’t know, I never got to choose my own house since hubby had already bought it when we started dating. I probably would not have picked this house, but oh well. It’s ours.

oh how exciting!!!
I know you probably don’t want to jinx it but I would love to see pics.
When we bought this house that we’re in right now I just fell in love with it even before we looked at it. When we seen it i was let down a bit since it was sorta trashed but it was just all cosmetic. Now I can’t even imagine living in a different house. This house is perfect for us & it sorta felt like it when we came through.
I agree, if it sells, it wasn’t meant to be…
Good luck & hope you find your dream home!

how exciting for you! I am sitting in anticipation of what will happen next.
I knew when I saw the back yard that this was our home. The house itself is not that great but has good bones …. so potential to be all that we want. But the back yard…. had me sold.

When you find the right house, you will know it. The first I actually bid on was the one I wanted SO bad! But the realtor was new and lead me in the wrong direction and I lost that house. The second house? I still love it, but the bathroom is WAY too small compared to the first house I wanted, but this one is much bigger (has five bedrooms instead of two) and I’m happy.
Go with your gut. It will never be wrong!

The house that we bought 3 years ago “spoke” to us. I could envision raising our kids here into adulthood. I’m glad we bought it, even if we bought when the market was high.
Best of luck choosing the right house!

Good luck. It is a fun and tough process but still enjoy it. And yes I imagined Max playing in the yard with other kids.

We were just as excited when we wanted to get the first house. Sad to say, everything was not as perfect as it turned out.
Good luck with your search
