Dear Internets
I NEED to know.
DO you dye your hair?
Are there environmentally friendly products out there?
HELP.
See the thing is, I always thought to myself, “Self, you will age gracefully, gray naturally and love yourself”.
Somehow, Self thought that at 32 I should be graying. Like a lot. See if you ask anyone else, they say it is not a lot of gray.
They are wrong.
There is a TON of gray. I am starting to feel dull. I do not want to feel dull. I want to feel VIBRANT.Oh and umm I do not want to age YET. Like later, when I am old. I am not old. I am at my prime baby! While pregnant I chose not to dye my hair, now I need a change … a dark chocolate brown I think, maybe? What do you think?
So please tell me sweet internets … do you dye? Do you let someone else dye (I am cheap so chances are not for me)? Can we dye and not devestate the planet?

Well, I got my first gray hair when I was 22. I rarely dye my hair, but when I do I usually use an at home semi-permanent that matches my hair color. Natural Instincts. Now sure how good it is for the planet though.
The natural food store has a few choices, do you have a natural food store near by? Maybe you can find something there. Aveda also has some nice color shampoo you could try.

I do dye my hair. I go to a salon where they use the most natural products. I started dying my hair at 32 too. So check out salons it tends to last the longest.
Thanks for stopping by and we raise the chickens for eggs they are great pets.

I get my hair highlighted at a salon once every 3 months. LIke you I didn`t dye my hair when I was pregnant but I prefer my hair a little bit lighter than its natural colour so I fork out to get it dyed. I don`t know what I would do if I was going grey though, there are lots of nifty plant based hair dyes out there that are easy to use and pretty cheap as well, my Mum uses them as she is allergic to the ones with ammonia etc. in them.
I feel your pain though as I keep trying to convince myself that growing old gracefully is the way to go and I should be grateful that I get to have things like wrinkles because it means I am alive and get to grow old (touch wood) but it is hard when I look in the mirror and see wrinkles and bags staring back at me!!

I do, hair and there.
I go through cycles.
Last year I had 2 grey hairs. I now have 5!!! I blame it on living here!!!
There used to be a great selection of eco-friendly products at Great Ocean (or whatever it’s called now) on the corner of Quinpool Rd. and Beech St.
If you do want to go the professional route…email me, and I can give you my hair stylists info. Yes, I have one of the most expensive haircuts. $30 + the $650 plane ticket!

When I look really bad, I go to the salon but at $150 it only happens once a year or so. I usually use the grocery store stuff - never when pregnant though - as I’ve never had luck with the natural stuff lasting or looking good. If you find something, let me know!
I have a shitload of grey - it’s brutal!

This is from our “going green” thread on my Mom’s club message board:
1 part honey to 4 parts chamomile tea can naturally and gradually lighten hair without damage (this is due to the natural peroxide levels in honey). A rinse of sage, rosemary, and molassas can darken the hair. Cinnamon and paprika add red, but be careful because cinnamon can cause skin sensitivies, so always patch test.
Generally paprika or cinnamon will only tint the hair slightly redder, not dye it. But for resistant greys I would recommend henna (a mix or gloss- depending on what shade your going for) or a strong tea rinse made of hibiscus flowers- as those are actual natural dyes that condition the hair simultaneously. However I have to warn you that henna is VERY permanant (not an issue if your a redhead) and will not fade like synthetic or commercial dyes.

I dye mine and highlight it. Somehow, I feel that by highlighting it somehow masks the grey longer than without doing it. I go to the salon for mine. Probably not very “green” but I don’t dye mine but about every 7 or 8 months. So I go further between dyes than most do. I guess that is slightly “green” when you don’t do it every 3 months like they recommend. So I’m only “light green!”

I highlight my hair, or really I have someone else do it. I trade services with sometimes and sometimes I just outright pay for it. It covers my gray pretty good righ now.

Gosh I thought I never have to dye my hair too but I did ;(
The amazing thing is it only started graying nearer to the forehead so you can imagine the frustration. So yeah…cheaper to do it DIY and my hubby is happy to do it for me once in every four-five months perhaps.
Happy dyeing heheheh…

Ok, don’t hate me, but no grey hairs here….. and quite possible not for a really long time. I have thick Island hair. And my mums is still as black as the day she was born and is now in her 50’s. So here’s hoping!
However, I did go for some low-lights last time I went to the hairdressers, which I am going to up to mid lights next visit. I would say though, that they don’t use natural products - just what works!
My hair goes very dull in winter, so I wanted to brighten it up a bit.
And I agree, 32 years - we’re still spring chickens!

I dyed until James came home. It was really expensive so I quit. Now I’ve quit my fancy haircuts too (last haircut, Thanksgiving and that was at the cosmetology school, but how many books do I won? Priorities LOL).
I considered it last year because my grey has gotten very noticeable, especially when my hair is up (all summer). I have the distinguished grey sideburns which aren’t sideburns on a woman, nor are they distinguished. But, when you decided to dye, slowly, you go darker and darker (if you go in the brown shades) until you lookat a picture of yourself, and didn’t even realize your hair used to be so light. Just my observation from watching women who do this. Expensively (by, it takes, like 20 years to get to this point).
If you do decide to dye, I understand henna is natural, no?

I dye - I haven’t seen my natural colour since I was 19, so ummm… I have no idea if I even have gray hair or not!
July 22nd, 2008 at 11:25 pm
I dye & I do it myself. I figure why pay someone to do something I can do too? lol. I’m lucky I haven’t gotten any grays (yet) but I’m sure they won’t be too long.
I’m actually trying to grow my roots out now. I tried to dye back to the closest colour i was before so I actually haven’t dyed in over 2 months now. i say if you wanna do it, go for it! it’s just hair anyway, lol.

Well im not sure about the enviromentally friendly part but i dye my hair and generally do it myself, with a packet dye from the local supermarket.
So far all my home dye experiences have been good however if going blonde or ligther then natural colour i would consult a hair dresser!
Best bit? Whatever you do will grow out eventually!

Hello!!
I have a hairstylist here in Halifax that ONLY uses all natural hair products! She’s amazing!! Funny enough, she was my stylist in the Toronto area before she moved here. I was so sad to lose her because she really is that great!!
Budget doesn’t allow me to use her as often as well but B is understanding the importance a girl needs to feel good about herself!! When you see me this week, you will see how “thrifty” I am with the 2 inch long roots I’ve got sportin’!! Muahahahaha!!!!
I think it’s time to splurge.
As someone else mentioned, any health care store would carry hair dyes. They don’t always dye the way you might have been used to in the past though. But, this is a good thing because of the lack of carcinogens in the dye! Just something to keep in mind when you choose the color.

I’ve been covering my grays since I was in my 20’s. I’m 46 and it whiter all the time. I blame my dad. My mom (83) has less gray hair than me and she doesn’t dye her hair.
I say go for it. I do it myself because I can’t afford a hairdresser.

I’m not gray, but my hair did morph into a dull brown color a few years ago, and I’ve been dying my hair ever since then. I am not sure what is good for covering and/or blending gray in with your natural color, but I use either L’Oreal or Herbal Essences dye. Anything else I’ve tried has been crap. I am not sure what is out there as far as environmentally friendly products. I know that Manic Panic and Punky are, but I am not sure if they manufacture any ‘natural’ hair colors. All I’ve seen from them are vivid extreme colors. Good luck!

I didn’t start dying my hair till I was about 38, and I swore I NEVER would. But, it kept getting worse and worse. So, I use the Loreal that is guaranteed to cover the gray by 100%. It doesn’t drip, (but does smell), and works great. I pick a color that matches my own, but go one shade lighter and I have had GREAT success with it. I would NEVER pay someone else to color my hair. That is a LOT of money. One box of dye at $9 compared to the money some women spend??? I’m a cheapy, too, and just can’t do it.

I’ve dyed mine off and on for about the past 10 years. Yep, early gray runs in my family - at 37 years old, I’m over 50% gray now (sigh). I hate having to keep it up to avoid showing roots though. I haven’t found much in the way of ‘natural’ dyes and am kind of scared to try any of the ones that I’ve seen.

I just found this post, so you may have already colored your hair, but I just wanted to say that I am a stylist and I see a lot of customers who have messed their hair up at home and now need s professional to fix it.
If you really are going to attempt to do it yourself just remember to choose one level lighter than you think you need (over the counter colors tend to go darker and drabber).
You might like the result the first time, but if you continue to apply the color over all the hair, each time you do it, your hair will get progressively dryer and dryer until you can barely comb through it. So, you will want to get a friend involved (after that first application) and have them part your hair into sections and apply the color ONLY to the new growth (hair that has grown out from the scalp and never seen color before).
If you do go to a salon, I would call around and find someone who uses Schwarzkopf hair color. (It’s the brand I use and it is derived from many natural sources and has no carcinogens. I’m chemically sensitive and can’t work with many other colors because they have a heavy fragrance.)
Good luck!

Oh, you! I hadn’t yet considered the environmental implications. I dye, but as a reader of mine, you know I do it oh so infrequently, and not really to cover grey, though I’ve seen a couple silver vixens when the sun hits just right.
July 26th, 2008 at 9:32 pm
You could use henna or something, although I don’t find it covers grey very well. I dye my hair every six weeks, since I have prematurely very grey hair. Lucky me!

I got nothin’ for ya, babe. Except respect that you want to do it as naturally as possible.
I always HATED being a redhead, but now I’ve realized that my grays will be a longer-time coming. My mom was in her 60’s before the first reared up.
Whoops. That didn’t help, did it?

Oh my goodness yes. I go to a place called http://www.naturalfusionhairstudio.com, where they use all organicky products, and when you get a haircut, they send it to a company in California that weaves the hair into mats to soak up oil spills. Crazy, yes?
People ask me why nine of my kids have red hair- I’m all, uh, Cause their Dad’s name isn’t Clairol??

Hiya honey!
I dye. Boy do I. Good for the environment… I don’t know, and would doubt it. But what about the laundry soap that goes down the drain with each load of laundry? Bleach as well?
Anywho, maybe the semi permanent will work for you. I like it! I do go to a salon though, ’cause I do things sometimes that goodness knows I could really mess up. Like highlights.
BTW I have grey, and just kinda mix it up with highlighting. I love it!
