Welcome to Canada

Written by Chelle on Friday, May 23rd, 2008

I have been fortunate enough to have “met” a few Canadians that for varies reasons are living in America. Fellow bloggers, seeking one another out, for comfort and reassurance. Most Americans are shocked to hear that Canadians struggle in the United States and feel a tad misunderstood. There are Americans that have traveled or have chosen to educate themselves beyond, “Did you live in an igloo? or Do you know Sue from Vancouver?”, however I found myself correcting those that chose to not think of Canada as a foreign country and stating that not all Canadians know how to speak French.

I still read a lot of Canadian, living in the US blogs (I am not linking because I am not sure they want traffic, if I am wrong please let me know and I will link). Their experiences are so much like mine, not horrific yet life changing. I will never view racism the same again. I cannot understand the class system and how it is acceptable to the majority of people, that groups of people in their country suffer, while other prosper to the extreme. The “us” and “them” mentality threw me for a loop, since I was friendly with everyone, despite their colour, class, socio-economic standing and the like. I allowed my child to play with “coloured kids” GASP!

I am so so grateful to have returned to Canada. Our skies are crystal blue, we take care of the sick, elderly and those that cannot help themselves, we love hockey, drink beer, say hello to everyone, talk to strangers, and we have funny comedians that don’t hesitate to poke a little fun …

Have a great weekend everyone!

I’m with you, except for the talk to everyone and saying hello bit. I mean, I believe you do it in Canada, I just don’t want to do it. Cause you know, I don’t want to talk to anyone. :-)

Try living in a country that Americans fail to recognise! It pisses me off big time how they constantly refer to the UK as England. It’s pretty damn ignorant.

I fell in love with Canada when I was a little girl - not sure why but I think I inherited it from Grandma. Or maybe it was just the red flag…..

Lucky woman! I always swore, from the time I was 11, I was going to marry a Canadian so I could be one and live there.

Then I met my damn husband, and I love him too much to live out the Dream of the North. I shall do so vicariously through you.

Maybe it’s because I grew up in the military and moved around so much, but I didn’t experience the things you did living here…guess that is another benefit of being a “military brat” LOL

ooohhh…I must add, the worst question I ever received from an American about Canada…

First of all my husband and I both worked at a Parks Canada during University and have had so many crazy questions we thought that we had heard it all….then I met a woman in Carrollton, GA. who when finding out that there were laws concerning guns in Canada.
She asked, “What happens when your government turns against you? How do you protect yourselves?”

I knew a lot of Canadians who were here in Utah for various reasons… it was sad to me some of the things that people would ask about their country (but I don’t believe that ignorance is unique to America, especially after traveling).

However, one thing that I didn’t know and probably seemed stupid for asking was about the plug coming out of the front of my friend’s car. I had no idea that it got THAT cold that the cars had to be plugged in at night! :)

Canada is on my hit list to visit …… ONE DAY! On a single income it’s hard to imagine travelling ……
It’s interesting the stereotypes others have about different countries …. I think some people genuinely think that New Zealand is a state of Australia. That we all have sheep in our backyards. I guess, until you’ve visited a place, you’ll never know!
My first trip to Australia I expected to see Kangaroos hopping about (in the inner city) and koala bears up every tree. DUH! What was I on?
P.S if you’re ever down under there’s a cuppa brewing here!)

I want to go on the record as an American who loves Canada and Canadians. I have relatives that live there and many friends, but I understand where you are coming from. I had a good laugh because Americans are funny people and not everyone puts their best foot forward.

I’m glad you are home. It’s good to live in places that make us feel comfortable and warm inside.

I moved from NYC and sometimes I feel I live in another country. There is a big difference between NY and WV and NY and Washington state.

Thanks for the laughs. I really enjoy coming here and reading your posts and seeing pictures of your adorable children.

Ever since you were returning to Canada and to the East Coast no less I have been painfully envious. Never again will you have to grind your teeth as someone tells you they “just can’t vote for Obama,” because he’s a Muslim, not an American or a wimp, every reason except for the obvious.

I’m so happy that you’re back in Canada, but so sad that I’ve lost a fellow Canuck lost in the Yankee woods.
