Redrum Redrum

Wednesday, August 22nd, 2007

The KidsOk I know I am a stay at home mom, but in case you have failed to notice we do not stay at home all that much. We are all about the adventure.

So the last week of self-imposed quarantine has been rather trying to say the least. Becca, Ethan, J and then finally me have all suffered in one way or another with a nasty cold. Poor Becca has suffered the most, still experiencing a runny nose and a cough.

Being the mom of a three year old is a challenge in itself. Being the mom of a SICK, but in denial three old is impossible! We have fought, cried, fought some more … ugh. I hate that I cannot just take her in my arms and snuggle her till she feels better. That is not what she wants or needs. This week has slowly gotten better … thank the heavens.

Actually today was near perfect. The planets were aligned? Becca and I both got along fabulously and enjoyed each other’s company. It was wonderful. Ethan I am sure on some level was relieved! Poor boy has to be in the middle of two very head strong girls.

I sure hope the citizens of this fine town are grateful for my sacrifice this past week, saving them from illness, threatening my sanity.

Geek in Training

Monday, August 20th, 2007

Comfy and BeccaMy long time readers are well aware that J & I have geek-like tendencies. Being a tad geeky is something I am proud of. I (heart) my iBook and drool over the new iMacs. J is a chemist. ‘Nuff said.

Becca and Ethan are bound to be on the geek side. We are not big sport people, more the great outdoors type. Really my computer is on and within 15 feet at all times during the day and J sits in front of me now with TWO laptops working away.

It may surprise some, that I have yet to introduce Becca to the world of computers (being that I am so addicted). There are a few reasons for that. For starters that American and Canadian Pediatric Societies, do not recommend computer use until the age of three. Secondly, I am not all that excited about sharing my beloved. I knew that it was only a matter of time before Becca would become enamored with the technology. We restrict her use of television and computer time would be no different.

Just before we moved I was contacted and asked if Becca would be interested in trying out a computer based system, being that she was about to turn three (there is software available for younger but this is in part how she won me over). I agreed, stating we would be moving and that I would have little time to devote to a review. I was not entirely convinced Becca would be into it really.

I was so wrong.

Comfy is a computer based educational system, that my kid ADORES. The software is totally interactive, it comes with its own keyboard and has programs for a full range of ages. I was not entirely thrilled about the keyboard, believing that if one is going to learn to use a computer one should do so with the actual keyboard. However, Comfy is not about learning to use a computer per say, rather a fun and educational tool.

The company sent me the keyboard that included the “First Steps” software. It was a basic, however it was a great introduction to the use of the keyboard for Becca. What she really enjoyed was “The World of Colors“. There was so much for her to explore just in that one package! Not only could she work on trivia, answer basic questions, make music, she also was able to follow a story and interact with it. Becca could change the destiny of the characters! Although I am not entirely sure she totally understood the coolness of that, she totally enjoyed watched the effect of her actions.

Due to time constants, we have yet to explore the second software “Birthday Party“, which explores social experiences. Considering Becca plays birthday party all the time, I am sure it will be a big hit on the computer.

The software is PC, however would work with the dual processor Macs, and Boot Camp. I am actually a tad relieved that I do not have to share my beloved, hehe. J had no issues setting it up on his laptop, as with most software it was plug and play.

I was so not convinced that Comfy would really be our thing. Yet watching Becca interact with the software and characters totally showed me how wrong I was. I did not explore the software designed for children under the age of three and would not advocate the use of computers before that age, due to my personal reasons. Becca has really enjoyed exploring the software, and I am enjoying it as an educational tool. I look forward to working blogging beside Becca as she explores Comfyland!

Becca enjoying Comfy

I would to thank Alice, for the opportunity to review the Comfy products that her company supplied to our family for free in return for an honest review. Not only can you find Comfy at their website, but Ebay too!

Introducing …

Sunday, August 19th, 2007

The ClanWe would like to introduce the newest member of our Clan … SkippyJon Jones (hopefully our cat will be better behaved than his namesake!) Although Charisma appears well, we have had to resort to feeding him baby food with a syringe 2 times a day in order to get him to eat anything at all. Our hope is that with a companion he will perk up a little and eat on his own. So far he has only expressed disdain for the new one. This is not surprising, and we are hoping that he comes to adore the little one.

Skip seemed to have picked us. He appears rather insistent on hanging out with me (especially as I knit), however he is quite content to let Becca love him and play with him. J & I both forgot what it was like to have a kitten in the house!

Ethan does not seem to care either way :) He is however, weighing in at 16 lbs 2 oz and measuring 26 inches. He is the weight Becca was at 6 months rather than his four months, hehe. He took his shots hard and had a fever the next day. Actually both Ethan and Becca are suffering from a nasty cold. Green, thick snot, nasty achies and tiredness has infected the house. Poor J is now suffering as well. Somehow I have escaped the illness, for how long I cannot say.

I finished knitting my first pair of socks. The yarn knitted up awesome and it was a cool experience. I ramble on about it over here, and have started a swatch for another pair! I am officially addicted to sock knitting!

Ever So Random

Friday, August 17th, 2007

Becca and Daddy SwimmingI have been tagged … Amygeekgirl of Musings of a Crunchy Domestic Goddess (gosh I adore that blog name!) tagged me for the 8 random things meme. Since I just know you cannot get enough of ME, I was all excited!

1. No I am not pregnant. Two kids seems absolutely perfect for us at the moment.

2. I had to see the doctor because my vagina is broken. ~sigh~ Yes broken. I “over” healed and now things are not as they should be. The gynecologist has prescribed some estrogen cream and we are all hoping beyond hope that my vagina and scissors NEVER have to be in the same sentence again.

3. I had braces in my twenties. Actually months before we were married I still had braces on. Now my teeth are wonderfully straight.

4. For as long as I can remember I have had a crush on John Cusack, because of this movie, that everyone I know has never saw or heard of.

5. I totally love scary books. Stephen King is my favorite author (since I was 8), however I have a very vivid imagination. I do not take the garbage out, go to the bathroom, or see wind up chatter teeth without a moment of hesitation, wondering … what if …

6. I currently feed my cat twice a day with a syringe lamb baby food. Charisma is still losing weight. He is still a big cat, but really he cannot die. I love him.

7. Everyone that has met me in real life, believes I am this way outgoing, excited, happy person. Truly I am scared to death that nobody will like me and they will think I am an idiot. I put myself out there now for my kids. I had major social anxiety in Canada, pre-kid. To the point I isolated myself, virtually existing only online and at work. Being pregnant with Becca saved me from that. I did however, learn a lot about my creative process and how I wanted to express that.

Ethan and his Meerkat8. I feel like I have so much to learn. Like I am ten paces behind everyone else. I am always trying so hard to catch up. Just lately, I have met people that have changed that perception. Suddenly I am the girl with the knowledge. It feels good. Must read more.

Wow that got introspective.

Becca passed her swimming lessons and had her last class this week. Come September she will take the class with her peers, as I sit with Ethan on the bleachers. My baby girl is growing up! We also received our Meerkat Manor prize package (Thanks Aimee!) this week. Inside was a Meerkat puppet. Becca was upstairs taking a nap, so I showed Ethan (totally thinking Becca scored a new puppet). Ethan GRABBED the puppet and rarely lets go of it. In fact if you have seen that lady that wears a Meerkat in her baby sling (with the baby) in Los Alamos … yeah … That would be ME! Ethan loves that Meerkat!

Have you seen this YouTube video of a Dad singing about bedtime? Awesome!

ugh

Thursday, August 16th, 2007

EthanI am sure I had a post in mind. I am so tired. Becca has a nasty cold. She woke crying many times throughout the night. When she is up, Ethan is up. J is up. I am up. Poor girl. She truly feels utterly terrible. Now that we have drugged her she seems a little better, but still.

I just fell asleep on her bed, nursing Ethan while she got herself out of the tub, dried herself off and got dressed (her bathroom is connected to her room, I was not truly in a  coma state, just dozing).

Ethan has his four month shots today. J is now going to take the afternoon off so that I can take Ethan, not to spread Becca’s cold to every kid in Los Alamos. My plan was to walk there with both of them, I just cannot do that now, with her sick … me exhausted.

I am also seeing the doctor today. I have not decided yet if I want to share why. I may once I know more. Nothing life threatening, promise … more personal.

The SandboxMy husband is so awesome. He could not have gotten more than four hours of sleep. He is the bestest Dad ever. Have you seen the Diaper Vest - the wearable diaper bag by DadGear? J totally would love it, so when I saw that SugarMama had a contest for it I had to do a plug (I adore her as well, it is not ALL about winning … hehe). Could your man use a Diaper Vest? Go check out her site and enter the contest!

After last night J is even more deserving. Poor guy. Poor kid.

Gosh I am tired. Sick kids are tough. Having two kids, one sick one not. Tough.

As you can see, we did get the sandbox. Becca ADORES it! Score!
