Pic of the Day ~ An Apple a Day ~

Becca enjoying an appleBecca has had some issues sleeping lately that have J & I in a tizzy! We have overall been extremely fortunate not to have sleep issues. There were short periods of time that Becca would struggle, yet we always seemed to make it through.

I fear that the days of afternoon naps are soon approaching. With her schedule being all topsy turvey with J being home, Christmas and all that jazz, she has been not wanting to sleep at all. She will go to bed just fine, but then five minutes later she is up and out of her room. Very frustrating!

Becca has been talking a lot about ghosts. In a new Richard Scarry book that she received for Christmas the characters go on a camp out in the backyard and get spooked after ther friend tells them a “ghost story”. Since then our kid has been up until at least 11pm EVERY NIGHT!

So tonight, J tried everything to get her to stay put. Then I went in … Becca has a light show of sorts that plays a short tune and reflects stars and animals on the ceiling for five minutes. We have put it on for her for as long as I can remember. The timing of her exits, are right after her “stars” turn off. I by pure fluke, offered her a glo-worm her Aunt had given her eons ago (we had to disconnect the music part, oh my the music it played was horrific!). Glo-worm saved the NIGHT! Becca went to sleep! See now if she needs a light she can have a little light momentarily.

I am not a fan of the night light theory. I am not entirely sure why I am not a fan. I do think kids should grasp and contain their imaginations. In a way that if there is an issue they can be provided tools and stories to help them through it. Just like the glo-worm. Becca is a tad young for us to be spraying ghost-repellent or setting traps, however I do not want her to have a false safe guard either, like a night light.

On a completely other thought, a lot of you have voted in the poll that I placed in the sidebar before Christmas. I would love to hear from you why you voted one way or another. I think J& I have decided what we are going to do as far as circumcision goes, however other perspectives are always welcome (if you would rather email me just click the contact button at the top of the page).

After a long process of elimination, J & I have decided on a name for our sweet little boy. It was way harder to chose a name for this little one than it was for Becca. Boys names are tough! We have honoured J’s side of the family with Becca’s middle name Ann, and wanted to do the same for my side …. We are planning on naming our boy, Ethan George M ….. George is my grandfather’s name, a man that was one of my best friends and took me in when I needed him the most. So it totally means a lot to me that we are naming our son after him. Besides, the kid is keeping J’s family name going!

As for the new look …. I wanted an earthy, warm, boy-ish pregnant theme and hammered away until this came to be. I seem to have a fascination for browns as of late. I am hoping that I will sit with this theme until the baby arrives. I have some projects waiting for my attention and my energy levels are not the same as my pre-pregnant self.

Very pretty theme! It’s very warm!

All that talk about Becca and ghosts made me remember how hysterical my youngest nephew would get when he went to bed. He was around three at the time and kept telling his mum he was afraid of the cat and the green light in the room. He described it in far too much detail for it to be his imagination and he used to stare at one particular spot in the room, going on about the cat. It used to even freak my brother out the way Andrew used to keep staring at the same spot.

My sister-in-law was so concerned she even went to a Wiccan shop nearby for advice and put up protective crystals all over the room.

It stopped after a while but they’ve moved house now anyway.

  2. Deb says:

Poor Becca! That’s tough. My toddler isn’t really afraid of ghosts, but there’s a Halloween commercial about a haunted house that scares the crap out of him.

  3. Deb says:

I like the new look BTW.

  4. Marz says:

    Love the new look!

Email me to let me know what you decided re circ. You know what I think of it.

Love the name!! Glad you decided!

As to Becca, from talking to other moms it seems like they all hit the afraid of monsters/ghosts phase right about 2.5 years old. I had a night light on for Nate in his room more so for me then him but he is the one that wants it totally dark as said he doesn’t like shadows. We also use his Thomas whistle to get rid of monsters in his room.
You could also tell her that the ghosts are afraid to come into your home because they’re afraid of the cat or Pooh Bear or something like that.
good luck, it’s tough, we’re still dealing with the issue of monsters off & on.

  5. Michelle says:

    I’m partial to male E names myself . . . Ethan, Evan, Everett . . . I have a nephew named Ethan. A great choice.

  6. Betty says:

I love the theme and I LOVE LOVE LOVE the name you picked!!

    I still use a nightllight… :(
But only if I’m home alone. If Beetle is here, I need complete darkness. Weird. I know.

  7. Chrissa says:

First, I love the new look…very pretty!!

Sorry about the sleeping! I’m of the opinion that the children’s sleep is very important…mostly to my own sanity! Travis sleeps with a night light because he is terrified of the dark. Emily (she’s 9) has out grown the night light now. I think of it like lots of things in childhood that get outgrown. I don’t mind letting him sleep with it because he does sleep and I know eventually he’ll grow out of it and won’t need or want it anymore.

Also, I love the name you picked out!! As far as circumcision goes I’m for it, but I also think its a personal choice and that what’s right for me may not be right for someone else. I’m sure whatever decision you make will be the right one!!

  8. Jerri Anns says:

I Like the new digs….very nice!

  9. Wow, I love your son’s name! Plus your blog design for his imminent arrival is awesome. Three and a half short months to go!

Strawberry is afraid of the dark and only recently started expressing the idea of being scared of some things. We’ve taken to turning on a dim pink lamp until she falls asleep. My husband worries that about the theory that night lights effect vision.

  10. Awesome new theme! It’s really pretty.

I love the name Ethan. I know many here and they’re all nice kids. Good choice! (I can relax now… ;-) )

I am against circumcision simply because of the pain for no reason thing. If he ever wants to have it done, we’ll be glad to pay for it however, but it will be his choice to be sliced and risk infection. My original thought was always to do it and have him look like Daddy, but daddy said “I sure as hell don’t know what my dad’s dick looks like and he won’t remember mine, either. That’s just freaky.” Heh. So that put that logic out of play. Once I held him in my arms, there was no way I could let anyone hurt him just because of a silly preference of mine. It felt completely wrong.

    There’s my 2 cents.

  11. Janet says:

Love the new look. Really great.

I love the name you chose for your new little guy too. Very honorable and ‘handsome’ if a name can sound handsome.

Circumcision, I have no thoughts. I just automatically assumed I’d do it if I ever had a boy. No reason really…I don’t have a peenie, so I can’t tell you why I feel it’s a good thing. Just do. I am not against doing it or not doing it. Whatever makes you happy really.

  12. Rebecca says:

Ethan George is a spiffy name. I like it.
My kids have always had a nightlight – and predictably enough each one went through a “scared” phase at about 2 1/2.
We didn’t have our boy cirumcised, and it never really came up for discussion – it’s no longer done routinely at any of the hospitals I’ve been to in Canada. You have to schedule it and pay out of pocket – OHIP doesn’t cover it anymore. For me, that settled it – if there was no medical justification, why do it?

  13. Jacquie says:

Awesome name! Ethan is so cool. Your new design is very pleasing to the eye. Nightlights well lets just say my 12 year old STILL needs some sort of light, my 5 and 18mth old sleep with no light and the door closed. Ghosts hmmm my 5 yr old did say a few weeks ago that she “saw” a boy in the hallway (and was very adamant about it). Circumcision well I voted I would do it, mainly because of my nephews who were not and their experiences and then I worked as a PCA in a nursing home where many men were not and well lets just leave it at that as Rebecca said now in Canada there are no hospitals that do it and my OB/GYN was very reluctant but I guess having 3 girls solved that problem. Ultimately I guess it’s what you guys feels is right for you.

  14. Kristen says:

Happy 2007! I did just vote in your poll and I’ll tell you why I voted to not circumcize (or however you spell it). Now they’ve realized it’s just not necessary. It’s not unclean like they once thought. I have personal experience with this but I won’t post it here. If you want to chat about it, email me!

  15. Trish says:

I love your new theme! I will email you about the circ thing.

  16. Michelle says:

I love all the new looks you come up with for your blog! We’ve been having sleep issues with Kayla as of late too, and we had been fortunate not to have these issues either. We’ve tossed around the idea that she’s ready to give up her nap (although she does seem to need it as she falls asleep right away) but then she doesn’t seem to be tired at night and gets out of bed as soon as we are out of the door. Frustrating to say the least. Glad you found a solution, for now anyway!

Love the name you’ve settled on! My dad’s middle name is George :) And Kayla would have been Ethan if she was a boy. If we do have a boy Ethan will probably still be at the top of the list. I choose Tyler, and Joe likes Ethan, but Tyler Ethan didn’t have as good a ring to it as Ethan Tyler so Joe won :)

  17. tanyetta says:

perfect. i love the name ethan. i’ve missed your blog. just received a disney passport and thought of you. sure hope we’ll be able to go with you and becca.

  18. Awesome Mom says:

What a lovely and manly name for your little boy! I am glad that you picked something that would not get him beat up in school. ;)

I also adore the new theme, it is wonderful!!

We did not snip either of our boys. We had no religious reason to, the studies on the supposed advantages were not convincing and I was also worried about all the things that could go wrong with the procedure. Unsnipped are also easy to care for, you pretty much leave them alone until they are much older and more able to care for them themselves.

  19. Rebecca says:

    Great new look and name!!!!
And BEST wishes for the year ahead…it’s going to be an exciting one with the arrival of little Ethan!

  20. Jenny says:

I love the name and love the new look!

On the nightlight side though…personally I have an extremely strong imagination and my parents thought having a nightlight was a crutch so I became terrified of sleep. Even in college I slept with the light on. You might just have a little one with a massive imagination that needs a little light to let it go to sleep.

  21. Chelle Y. says:

That picture of Becca is so precious! I also love the new look!

  22. Tsoniki says:

Love the theme! I love brown and blue though. LOL

My kids have nightlights and we leave the hall light on. The hall light is so if they get up in the middle of the night they don’t run into stuff. LOL

  23. Lisa says:

oh my gosh, look how big and grown up Becca looks! Its been way to long since I’ve been around visiting, because she went and grew up when I wasn’t looking! (i’m sure you feel that way about her sometimes, too!!) SO excited to hear you are doing well and that Ethan is on the way!

  24. Duck is still afraid of ghosts and she’s 7. I love the new look!

  25. Midori says:

I Love the new look and your son`s name. Ethan was a name I liked too. (but scrapped as it becomes ee-san in Japanese because they don`t have the TH sound..)
